About the Speaker:

Maja Matarić is the Chan Soon-Shiong Distinguished Professor at the University of Southern California (USC), with appointments in Computer Science, Neuroscience, and Pediatrics. She is the founding director of the USC Robotics and Autonomous Systems Center, co-director of the USC Robotics Research Lab, and leads the USC Viterbi K-12 STEM Center. She earned her PhD and MS in Computer Science and AI from MIT, and a BS from the University of Kansas. A pioneer in socially assistive robotics, her research focuses on using robots to support rehabilitation, education, and care, particularly for children with autism, the elderly, and those recovering from stroke or brain injuries. Her Interaction Lab has led real-world deployments in hospitals, schools, and homes. Prof. Matarić is a member of the National Academies of Engineering and Arts & Sciences, and a Fellow of AAAS, IEEE, AAAI, and ACM. She has received numerous honors, including the PAESMEM award from President Obama, the Anita Borg Women of Vision Award, and the IEEE RAS Early Career Award. She is also a dedicated STEM education advocate and co-founder of Embodied, Inc., which launched Moxie, a socially assistive robot for children. Currently, she serves as a Principal Scientist at Google DeepMind.
